Ship Collectors Meeting March 27-29 2009
The next ship collectors meeting on the West Coast will be held at the Maritime Museum of Monterey in Monterey, California on Friday March 27th and Saturday March 28th 2009. The meeting is sponsored by the Society of Miniature Ship Collectors. 
The meeting will run from 10:00AM to 3:00PM with a meeting of Society of Miniature Ship Collectors following at 4:00 PM. Entrance to the museum and the show will be free. Display tables are available for a modest fee and due to limited space must be reserved in advance. No RSVP is required to attend. Reservations and payment for display tables may be by personal check or money order, and must be received no later than Friday, March 20, 2009. Please email John Olsen for details. Weekend Schedule of Events Friday March 27, 2009 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM- No host cocktail hour at Portola Hotel and Spa directly across from the museum. 7:00 PM- Dinner at Gilbert's Seafood Grill at Fisherman's Wharf. Saturday March 28, 2009 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM- Displays and sales at the Maritime Museum of Monterey. 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM- Meeting of Society of Miniature Ship Collectors at the Maritime Museum of Monterey. Sunday March 29, 2009 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM- Open house at the home of Paul Jacobs in Saratoga, California approximately one hour north of Monterey. Directions available at the meeting. The Maritime Museum of Monterey The first Maritime Museum of Monterey opened in 1971 as the Allen Knight Maritime Museum housed in the basement of the Monterey Museum of Art. It moved into its own building in 1992. The Maritime Museum holds almost 6000 artifacts, over 50,000 photographs, and 6000 books and papers in the collection. The 580 glass prisms of the historic Fresnel lens from the Point Sur Lightstation illuminate the Maritime Museum and its seven exhibit areas, from the Rumsien/Ohlone Indians and Spanish explorers, to the USS Macon and war in the Pacific, to Monterey’s era as the sardine capital of the world. 
Friday Night Dinner Friday night March 27th will feature a dinner in a private space at Gilbert's Seafood Grill at Fisherman's Wharf within walking distance of many area hotels. The cost of the dinner will be $35.00 per person. Each dinner will include your choice of coffee or iced tea, sourdough rolls with butter, chilled green salad with house vinaigrette dressing, sherbert ice cream for dessert, and your choice of one of the following entrees: - Red Snapper- lightly breaded and grilled served with vegetables and mashed potatos.
- Fresh Caught Salmon with basil pesto sauce served with vegetables and mashed potatos.
- Chicken Piccata- a breast of chicken sauteed with capers, white wine, and a dash of cream and fresh tomatoes. Served with vegetables and mashed potatos.
Cocktails can be ordered from Gilbert's bar but are not included in the $35 price. If you do not reserve and pay in advance you will not be able to attend the dinner. The peninsula forms the southern flank of Monterey Bay In Monterey - Monterey State Historical Park located adjacent to the Maritime Museum

- Cannery Row between the museum and the aquarium features shops and restaurants in the historic buildings that used to house the city's sardine canneries.
- Sea Food. From Fisherman's Wharf steps away from the meeting site to Cannery Row there are tons of great restaurants.

Getting There The museum is located at 5 Customs House Plaza in the center of Monterey. Google Maps for 5 Customs House Plaza
Driving to Monterey Monterey is located on the California coast two hours south of San Francisco. From the north take Highway 101 to Highway 156 signed to "Monterey Peninsula". Highway 156 will become Highway 1 South. Exit at Del Monte Avenue/Pacific Grove exit. Continue straight on Del Monte Avenue for approximately a mile and a half. Then turn right into the Fisherman's Wharf Historic Park parking area. If you go through the tunnel you've gone too far- turn around. From the south (Los Angeles, San Diego) take Highway 101 to Highway 68 in Salinas. Where Highway 68 meets Highway 1 move into the left lane to go toward Monterey. Take the Fremont Street exit and follow to the third signal. Turn right onto Abrego Street which becomes Washington Street. Follow Washington until it ends at the Fisherman's Wharf parking lot. The off freeway part of this drive is approximately 2 miles. Flying to Monterey Monterey Peninsula Airport is located only 10 minutes from the meeting location and features service by American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Air. Many of the hotels listed below offer shuttle service to and from the airport eliminating the need to rent a car. If you are flying and can connect into Monterey that should be your first option. San Jose International Airport is about an hours drive from Monterey and San Francisco International is about an hour and a half away. If you prefer not to rent a car there is a bus service from both airports to Monterey.
